Superheroes stage Orlando flyby

A Tampa-based group of aficionados known as the Heroes Alliance, who dress as comic-book characters, stopped in at several of the hospital's playrooms to show off their costumes and visit the children. Alliance members were volunteering their time to help Coliseum of Comics and B.A.S.E. Camp Children's Cancer Foundation, a Winter Park nonprofit that provides year-round financial and moral support for children with cancer and other life-threatening hematological illnesses.

I wanted to let you know that there has been some recent action regarding the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship and Quality of Life Act that you should be aware of.

Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has introduced a companion legislation to HR4450 in the Senate.

Those wishing to view the bill can do so at the following link on her website press release . Note that In the release there is reference to a 2005 IOM report rather than the 2003 IOM report as the impetus for the legislation. Sen. Clinton's staffers are aware of this error and will be revising the press release shortly.

How and Where to Enter:

All participants (boys and girls, aged 7-14) can enrol on or before the day of the events, free of charge, at the previously mentioned golf course .

Participants can also register at www.GolfChannel.com/kids quickly and easily!

Competitors will be divided into four age groups: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14.

Competition Specifics...

Driving

Each competitor will hit two drives, each measured for distance and accuracy. The longer of the two drives will be scored.

Chipping

Each competitor will chip three balls onto a green pre-marked with concentric circles. Balls that land in the innermost circles will score the highest points,
with bonus points awarded for any chip that goes in the cup.

Putting

Each competitor will putt two balls - one five feet from the hole, the other 15 feet. The objective will be to sink the putts in as few strokes as possible.

Awards

Eighteen prizes will be awarded in each age group; one each to the top five "drivers, chippers, and putters", as well as first, second, and third rankings for the best combined performance.

Family Needs Car / Computer

My name is Miranda. My husband and I are parents to two wonderful children, Morgan and Blake. We live in Polk County, Florida. On January 1, 2008, Blake was diagnosed with what the doctors believed was an AT/RT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor) brain tumor. He receives treatment in Orlando, FL. This is a rare and very aggressive cancerous tumor and requires very aggressive treatment with very powerful chemo drugs. This tumor was located in the back of Blake's brain. In the month of January, Blake underwent five surgeries, four of which were on his brain. Because of where the brain was located in his brain, Blake now needs to have a shunt to help drain the fluid in his head. Blake has also been to Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville, FL where he had to go through a stem harvest for the doctors to collect his stem cells because he also requires three stem cell transplants. Blake will also have to have five to six weeks of radiation.

Currently, Blake is doing very well. He has just completed his third round of chemotherapy and has been able to return home. While, Blake and I were at the hospital, the doctor called me and told me that after doing some further tests on Blake's tumor, they found out the type of tumor that Blake actually has/had is called "Anaplastic Large Cell Melludoblastoma" or possibly a Melludoblastmyoma. This type of tumor is more aggressive than an AT/RT tumor because it requires stronger full cranial and spinal cord radiation. With having this kind of radiation, Blake is facing the possibility of having learning disabilities, development problems, short-term memory problem, and growth problems in addition to the short-term side effects. The reoccurrence rate for this tumor is at 60%, which is worse than with the AT/RT tumor. In three weeks, Blake has to return to Gainesville to begin his transplants. Blake and I will be up in Gainesville for three months. Once up in Gainesville, we will find out where the radiation treatment will be done. The doctors have made us aware of the possibility that the radiation could be done in Gainesville also. Which if it is, Blake and I will have to stay in Gainesville for an addition two months. This makes it a little difficult for my family and I, because my husband and I only have one vehicle. There are several things that we need; however, there are three things that we need now.

One thing is we need another vehicle so that I would be able to get Blake to the hospitals and to the doctor's appointments, so that my husband would not have to take time off from work.

The second thing is another computer

and the last thing is, we just need some money. Any kind of help that we can get would be greatly appreciated.

Guys with Ties Philanthropy "Costumes for a Cause" fund-raiser to benefit B.A.S.E. Camp was a huge success!

Friday, October 26th

Guys with Ties Philanthropy hosted a party with a purpose at downtown's Club Dolce! The costumes were phenomenal, and the money raised was AWESOME! Guys with Ties exceeded their goal and raised the most money ever for a chosen charity $21,588.34!

Over 1,100 guests filled Club Dolce, arriving when the doors opened at 8:30 P.M. and partying until 2:00 A.M.! Both floors of the fabulous Club Dolce on Church Street were packed with party goers in costumes ranging from an airbrushed white tiger to The Three Amigos. Everyone came to party, and "party they did"! Guys with Ties judges chose "Best Costume" categories offering fabulous prizes, and complimentary beverages flowed from 8:30 P.M. - 10:30 P.M.!

We would like to thank the wonderful Guys with Ties; their key sponsor; and our own B.A.S.E. Camp Dad, David Munoz of Turner Construction; The Presentation Group; the Host Committee; and the dedicated volunteers for all of their efforts!

The Guys have pledged to sponsor the event again next year! It’s the party of the year and you don’t want to miss it!
